As the West Bengal election scene heats up, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday attacked the TMC for betraying women and people of Bengal, and accused the party of blocking critical legislation for women’s reservation and indulging in deep-rooted corruption.Addressing rallies in Bishnupur, Purulia and Medinipur, Modi accused the ruling party of opposing the Women’s Reservation Bill, denying women the opportunity to voice their rights in Parliament and state Assemblies. He described this as a deliberate effort by the TMC to maintain its “stranglehold over the state, keeping women and marginalised communities voiceless in the corridors of power”.“The TMC has deceived Bengal’s women, blocking their rightful chance for representation. This is a betrayal of women, youth, farmers and tribals across the state,” Modi said, adding that voters to “punish the TMC for this crime” at the ballot box. Modi expressed confidence that the BJP would form the next government in Bengal with a “decisive majority”.Drawing comparisons with the BJP’s victories in neighboring states like Tripura and Assam, Modi said, “Whenever fear and corruption reach their peak, people trust the BJP to deliver honest governance and development. Bengal has made up its mind. Fear out, trust in. The people of Bengal will no longer tolerate the TMC’s jungle raj.”The Prime Minister also accused the TMC of ruining the state’s economy and infrastructure, and highlighted the alarming rise in unemployment.Modi pointed to the alleged corruption in the recruitment of teachers, defrauding thousands of young job-seekers, and alleged that nothing gets done in Bengal without bribery. He further criticised the TMC for choking industry and investment in the state, stressing that “factories don’t come out of fear but trust”.Modi promised that under the BJP government, this culture of extortion and corruption would be uprooted, and an environment of trust and growth for industry and employment would be ensured.Alleging exploitation of farmers, particular potato growers, Modi said they have been victims of the “TMC’s syndicate-run markets and cold storage systems”. He accused the TMC of allowing these syndicates to tighten their grip on the agricultural sector, which had led to the suffering of farmers. Speaking about the tribal community in the state, the Prime Minister accused the TMC of failing to provide basic amenities like roads, electricity, water and healthcare in tribal districts. “The TMC’s syndicates have seized control of the tribals’ land, depriving them of their rights,” Modi said, stressing that the BJP government would work to uplift the tribal communities and ensure they regain control over their land and resources.Addressing women’s welfare, Modi promised that under the BJP government, poor women would receive free rations, and women would benefit from up to Rs 1.5 lakh through the PM Awas Yojana to build permanent homes. He also pledged that, unlike the TMC government, which had unjustly halted the Ayushman Yojana, women in Bengal would receive free medical treatment worth up to Rs 5 lakh under the BJP’s healthcare schemes.
