Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, framing the upcoming political battle in the state as a decisive “fight for freedom from crime and corruption.”Addressing a series of public rallies in the state, Shah asserted that the election was not merely a contest for power but an “attempt to free Bengal from the crimes of the TMC” and the long-standing grievances of North Bengal and the Darjeeling region. He claimed that people across the state were now ready for a change and predicted a strong mandate for the BJP.Campaigning for the first phase of elections in West Bengal concluded today. A total of 152 Assembly constituencies will go to the polls on April 23.Focusing on the Darjeeling hills and the Gorkha community, Shah alleged that “false cases” had been filed against Gorkha residents and promised swift action if the BJP came to power. He stated that a BJP government would withdraw such cases by July 31 and work within six months toward a “durable solution” to the long-pending Gorkha issue.Shah also accused the Congress and TMC of betraying the interests of Darjeeling and the Gorkha community, reiterating that the BJP remained committed to restoring peace and stability in the region. On the issue of infiltrators, Shah warned that after the BJP comes to power in the state, all infiltrators would have to “prepare to leave quickly.” He added that the BJP would work to eliminate infiltration across the country, from the Bay of Bengal to the Indian Ocean.Turning his criticism toward the state government, Shah alleged that the TMC, which came to power on the slogan of “Ma, Mati, Manush,” had instead enabled corruption and “mafias” in sectors such as sand, land, and tourism. He claimed that once the BJP formed the government, accountability would be fixed for every rupee of alleged corruption.Shah alleged that the TMC had allowed coal mafias and illegal mining operations to flourish, claiming that such activities had enriched “syndicates” linked to the ruling party. He further asserted that the TMC’s tenure was nearing its end, stating that it would remain in power only “for a few more days.”Shah said that once the Bharatiya Janata Party forms the government after May 4, strict action would be taken against corruption, adding that those involved in alleged wrongdoing, including party leaders and workers, would face imprisonment. He also made confident predictions about electoral performance in several constituencies, including the Kulti Assembly segment, claiming that a “saffron wave” was visible on the ground and that public support was shifting decisively towards the BJP.
