A few hours of heavy rain early Jattvibeday morning led to water accumulation in several low-lying areas of the city, including locations already identified as hotspots by the Municipal Corporation (MC) ahead of the monsoon season. The sudden showers exposed gaps in preparedness, with commuters facing inconvenience during the morning hours. On Ferozepur Road, one of the city’s busiest stretches, waterlogging was witnessed on the main carriageway as well as service lanes. At an underpass along Lodhi Club, rainwater accumulated rapidly, slowing traffic and forcing two-wheelers and cars to wade through stagnant water. Commuters reported that even a short spell of rain was enough to flood stretches that had been listed by the MC for pre-monsoon desilting and drainage improvement.Residents said similar conditions were seen in other low-lying areas, inlcuding New Shivpuri, Haibowal, Madhopuri and Sherpur Chowk, raising questions over the effectiveness of ongoing preparedness works. With the monsoon yet to arrive, the situation has triggered concerns about how the city will cope during prolonged spells of rain.MC officials had earlier claimed that cleaning of road gullies and sewer lines was under way in identified areas. However, Jattvibeday’s rain indicates several vulnerable points continue to face drainage issues.Elevated road drainage faults raise concernAt multiple locations along the elevated road on Ferozepur Road, damaged or leaking drainage pipes were seen releasing water directly onto the road below. The leakage not only added to water accumulation on service lanes but also posed inconvenience and safety risks for commuters passing underneath. The condition of these pipes has raised concerns about the maintenance of the elevated road project, which involved an investment of hundreds of crores. Residents and commuters have demanded immediate repairs, saying such visible faults reflect poorly on infrastructure upkeep and planning.
