Aston Villa vs Tottenham preview
A point is unlikely to suffice as relegation-threatened Tottenham take on Aston Villa in the Premier League at Villa Park tonight.
That may be just as well, given none of the last 21 Premier League meetings between Villa and Spurs have ended level – only Chelsea against Crystal Palace has produced a longer run without a draw in the competition’s history.
Sitting 18th and two points adrift of safety with just four games remaining, Roberto De Zerbi’s side need maximum points to preserve their top-flight status.
They’ve given themselves a fighting chance after a 2-2 draw with Brighton, followed by a narrow 1-0 win at Wolves – a result that ended a 15-game winless run.
There has been a clear uptick in performance levels since De Zerbi’s arrival, with Spurs averaging more pressed sequences per game and more possession won in the final third than under Thomas Frank or Igor Tudor.
They’ll need that to continue tonight, especially given their recent record in this fixture.
Tottenham have lost six of their last 10 Premier League games against Villa, with the hosts winning and scoring twice in each of the last four – including in the Premier League and FA Cup this season.
That said, this could be a good time to face the Villans following their 1-0 Europa League defeat against Nottingham Forest on Thursday, with the crucial return leg coming up in four days’ time.
Unai Emery’s side have also won just two of their previous seven Premier League games (D1 L4), suffering as many defeats as in their prior 24 matches.
A return to home comforts should help Villa, who have won each of their last four in all competitions – three of them with a clean sheet.
