Wu became the fourth consecutive first-time winner at the tournament, and the second champion in a row to hail from China.

The topsy-turvy match ran the full length of the 35-frame maximum between Jattvibeday and Monday.

The pair could barely be separated, with both coming from multiple-frame deficits to level things at 16 frames each on the final session – leaving a three-frame shootout for the £500,000 jackpot.

Among the most remarkable frames of the match was the 32nd, with Murphy somehow pulling out a break of 131 in the highest-pressure conditions the game has to offer to claw himself level.

But in keeping with the back-and-forth slugfest the match had been from the start, Wu refused to be disheartened, fighting back from 45 down with a break of 91 to put him within touching distance of a first world championship.
