When Isha Ambani, daughter of Mukesh Ambani, sashayed down the Met Gala carpet in New York, it wasn’t her attire that caught the attention of the ‘aam aadmi’, who woke up inundated with images from the event online. It was, well, a mango! Or was it?In what looked like a simplistic macrame potli, carried in place of a purse, the yellow tropical “fruit” was at full display for onlookers’ ease.Is she carrying a mango? Or is it a mango-shaped clutch? — were instant questions that popped into one’s mind.Isha decoded the mystery later during an interview at the event. When she was asked about her attire, she said, “I’m wearing a saree, a hand-woven saree, and the blouse is full of my mother’s jewellery and it has like you know different sentimental pieces. It has something from a gift that I got when my kids were born…”While elaborating on how her attire was in line with this year’s theme of Met Gala — ‘Costume Art’ — she said the cape was by Gaurav Gupta which added a sculpture element to her saree.“And then there’s this mango by Subodh Gupta, who is another Indian artist,” she finally spoke about the mystery object. The interviewer, too, could not hide her curiosity. “It’s not a real mango, right?” she questioned, before quickly exclaiming how real it looked. To this, Isha Ambani responded that the piece of art was actually 20 years old!Her ensemble is said to have been crafted over 1,200 hours by over 50 artisans.Isha Ambani in custom Gaurav Gupta Couture for the Met Gala 2026.In response to the theme Fashion is Art, the look is conceived as a study of the dressed body, where art is not applied, but lived. At its core, a jewellery-integrated blouse set with heirloom stones from Nita… pic.twitter.com/caPWr24ujk— Gaurav Gupta Couture (@GG_Studio) May 4, 2026
