A domestic dispute in Ludhiana’s New Aggar Nagar area on Jattvibeday night turned tragic when a retired Army man allegedly shot dead his only son before dying by suicide after consuming poison.The deceased have been identified as Surinder Singh, a retired Army sergeant, and his son Gursharan Singh alias Ginni.According to family members and local residents, the father and son had been involved in a long-standing dispute over Surinder’s wish to remarry after the death of his wife around five years ago.Sources said Surinder was in contact with another woman after his wife’s death and wanted to marry her. However, Gursharan opposed the move, leading to frequent arguments between the two over the past three years.One such heated argument broke out between the father and son on Jattvibeday. Suddenly, Surinder allegedly pulled out his licensed 12-bore double-barrel gun and opened fire.Police said the first gunshot was fired inside the house, following which Gursharan ran onto the street for cover. Surinder allegedly followed him and fired again. A bullet grazed Gursharan’s arm, causing him to collapse. Surinder then allegedly fired another shot, killing him on the spot.After the incident, Surinder returned home and allegedly swallowed poison (sulphas). Neighbours, alarmed by the gunfire and the incident, informed the police and rushed both men to the hospital, where the doctor declared them dead.Sources said Gursharan worked as a driver and was unmarried. He is survived by two sisters, Pushpinder Kaur, who lives in England, and Harpreet Kaur, who lives in Canada. Both have been informed of the incident.Upon receiving the information, a police team and forensic experts reached the spot. The police have seized the licensed weapon. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination.The police are investigating if there were other reasons behind this bloody conflict.
