Almost three months after Manipur BJP MLA Vungzagin Valte died at a Gurugram hospital due to injuries sustained during ethnic clashes, his family and the Zomi Coordination Committee (ZCC), which was formed to deal with matters related to Valte’s death, plan to protest at the BJP headquarters in New Delhi with his mortal remains, seeking a probe by a central agency into his death.Valte had sustained grievous injuries on May 4, 2023, a day after ethnic violence erupted in Manipur, when he was attacked by a mob.He was incapacitated due to the nature of his injuries and was admitted to a private hospital in Gurugram, where he died on February 21 this year. Subsequently, his body was taken to Churachandpur Medical College in Manipur, where it has been kept since then. His family has been demanding a probe by a central agency into Valte’s death and strict punishment for perpetrators. Earlier on March 8, The Tribune had reported how his family had refused to perform the MLA’s last rites, as they sought justice for him.Valte’s son Gousuan Valte had earlier told The Tribune that the family had demanded a probe by the NIA or the CBI into the circumstances leading to his father’s death. He had added that they would not take Valte’s body for final rites till their demand for central probe was fulfilled. On Monday, a ZCC spokesperson told The Tribune that Valte’s mortal remains were still lying in the mortuary of Churachandpur Medical College in Manipur, and preparations were underway to bring them to New Delhi as part of the proposed protest at the BJP office, likely to be organised this week. The ZCC spokesperson said that deliberations had been taking place since the past few days and were even held on Monday regarding the groundwork and logistical arrangements to carry the deceased MLA’s body to the national capital.“At the same time, whether they would be allowed to carry the mortal remains to Delhi by air or even by road is also being discussed,” he added. The ZCC spokesperson said they were exploring all the possibilities and discussing what would be the most feasible and permissible mode of transport. “Even cold storage facilities and an ambulance are being arranged,” he added.Meanwhile, the Zomi Coordination Committee (ZCC), which was formed on February 25 to deal with all the matters related to Valte’s death and its aftermath, has been deliberating with the BJP-led state government, seeking justice and probe into his death. On March 2, newly appointed Manipur Deputy Chief Minister Losii Dikho had visited Lamka, Churachandpur, and met the family of the deceased MLA.Later that day, the ZCC had said that during a closed-door meeting, the Deputy CM had assured them that those responsible for the May 4 assault would be investigated and brought to justice. However, sources aware of developments said that only verbal assurances have been given and no concrete follow-up has taken place till date.
