Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of compromising India’s interests to protect billionaire industrialist Gautam Adani, after reports emerged that the US government had agreed to settle a lawsuit accusing the Adani Group of concealing an alleged bribery scheme linked to solar energy contracts in India. In a post on X, Rahul alleged that the Prime Minister had not negotiated a trade agreement with the United States but had instead secured a “deal” for Adani. “Compromised PM did not strike a trade deal, but a bargain for Adani’s release,” he said. The remarks came after court filings published on Thursday stated that the US government had agreed to settle the lawsuit filed against Gautam Adani and others over allegations that investors were misled about anti-bribery compliance linked to a major solar energy project in India.According to the lawsuit filed in late 2024 by the US Securities and Exchange Commission, Gautam Adani and his nephew Sagar Adani were accused of agreeing to pay nearly $265 million in bribes to Indian government officials between 2020 and 2024 to secure solar energy supply contracts expected to generate profits of nearly $2 billion over two decades. The lawsuit further alleged that the Adani Group raised nearly $2 billion through loans and bonds, including from US investors, on the basis of allegedly false and misleading claims regarding the company’s anti-bribery policies and practices. The Adani Group has denied all allegations.Congress general secretary and Rajya Sabha MP Jairam Ramesh said the reports had exposed why the Modi government agreed to what he called a “hopelessly one-sided Indo-US trade deal”.“It is now clear why the PM agreed to the hopelessly one-sided Indo-US trade deal that was really a steal by the US,” Ramesh said in a post on X.He also linked the development to “Operation Sindoor”, alleging that the Prime Minister halted the operation on May 10, 2025, under pressure from US President Donald Trump. “How much more compromised can the PM get?” he asked.
