Chapters restaurant in Hay-on-Wye in Powys is closing its doors for the final time this evening (Saturday, May 16).

It marked the first site for owners Mark, who was named the best Chef in Wales, and Charmaine McHugo, who opened the venue back in 2019, two years after they first met.

The relaxed fine-dining restaurant hosted 22 covers in the town’s stunning converted St John’s chapel.

Chapters focused on sustainability, serving local produce and even sourcing much of its menu from its walled garden.

The site went on to earn a green Michelin star in 2022 and was also awarded with 360 Eats’ prestigious Three Green Circles, as well as being named the Wales Slow Food Awards restaurant of the year.

The McHugos announced the site’s closure in an Instagram post last month.

“We are so proud of the restaurant that we have created in Hay-on-Wye, we have met the most wonderful people along the way, the producers that have supplied us with the most amazing ingredients, the people that have worked alongside us, the guests!” they wrote.

“But seven years is a long time and as you know from joining us in the restaurant, the way we operate is personal and intimate.

“You know that when you dine with us, Mark will be in the kitchen and I will always be there in the restaurant, this is an unusual set-up but one that we think you all appreciated.”

The pair went on to share how happy they are “with what we have achieved” and said they were delighted with the repeated custom over the years.

“We have made the decision that now is the time to hand over the reins of the meeting rooms at St John’s Chapel and for someone else to write the next chapter,” the statement concluded.
