Double red lines have been painted on roads in the Castleton area and Mam Tor approach roads in the Peak District, which attracts millions of visitors a year.

The new rules mean vehicles are not allowed to stop or park on the road, verge or pavement behind the lines.

According to the council, the red routes are designed to manage traffic and promote safe parking.

Drivers who ignore the red lines will face a £70 fine, reduced to £35 if paid within 14 days.

New double yellow lines are also being introduced in the Castleton area, which is often inundated with tourists over the summer and bank holidays.

However, due to the recent spell of bad weather across the Peak District, the red routes are still to be completed.

This means they will not be in operation for the forthcoming Bank Holiday weekend.

Existing yellow lines in the village, which have been repainted to ensure better visibility, will be enforced as usual.

The huge influx of tourists to the area has caused numerous problems for locals in recent years, with farmers unable to get to livestock.

In some cases, emergency vehicles have not been able to gain access when required.
