AN ICONIC British shoe chain has returned to the high street just weeks after mass closures.

Its return follows the brand’s acquisition by a major retailer in a pre-pack administration deal earlier this year.

A Russell & Bromley store located in Richmond has reopened under new ownership, reported Drapers.

Despite closing in April, the London site has returned to the high street.

Now belonging to Next, the retailer acquired the footwear chain in a pre-pack insolvency deal.

The £2.5 million administration deal took place in January, with Next acquiring the brand, intellectual property, and three stores.

The other stores are located in Chelsea, Mayfair and Kent.

The Richmond store lease was handed over to Next earlier this week and now the historic store is open to shoppers once again.

The remaining 33 stores across the UK have now all been shut down as part of a phased closure.

The footwear store was established in 1880 by George Bromley and Elizabeth Russell in Eastbourne.

It became synonymous with luxury leather footwear and stylish handbags and was a favourite fashion pick among big names, including Billie Piper, Katie Holmes and Kate Middleton.

However, weak demand and rising costs led to continued struggles for the brand, with the business last profitable in 2019.

Alongside the chain, Next has also bought up other high street brands including Joules, Cath Kidston and the maternity wear retailer, Seraphine.

Next also has sights set on acquiring another luxury brand.
