US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Saturday and extended an invitation to visit Washington on behalf of US President Donald Trump.Breaking the news on X, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor said, “News! Secretary Marco Rubio extended an invite on behalf of President Donald Trump, for Prime Minister Modi to visit the White House in the near future.”Rubio, who arrived in Kolkata on Saturday morning to begin his four-day India visit, his first trip to the country since taking office last year, is likely to pitch for US oil sales in his meeting with PM Modi. The pitch is obvious with the West Asia crisis looming and global energy prices soaring.Interestingly, Rubio arrived in India the same day as state owned oil marketing firms raised fuel prices for the third time since May 15 to offset losses being incurred on account of buying costly fuel and selling it cheaper to consumers.Rubio’s visit is significant as India and the US look to repair ties that strained starting last year.Rubio will also meet External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar besides attending the gathering of Quad foreign ministers in Delhi on May 26.
