Crews had been tackling the blaze for around an hour when the devastating blast took place.
Among the 36 injured injured, who are primarily first responders, two have been hospitalised with serious injuries and have been identified as members of the fire department.
“I ask every New Yorker to keep those injured — and their families — in your thoughts,” the city’s mayor Zohran Mamdani said on X.
The Mayor said that FDNY Fire Marshal Cucher is critical but stable with a small brain bleed and temporal fracture.
The second hospitalized firefighter is in a serious but stable condition, he added.
