The Chandigarh Police have arrested a liquor vend owner after a video showing alcohol being openly served in Sector 9 market went viral on social media, triggering widespread criticism across the city.The controversial event, dubbed “Liquor Langar” by social media users, was allegedly organised outside a liquor vend named ‘Liquor World’ in Chandigarh’s upscale Sector 9 market. The area is considered one of the city’s posh localities and is frequently visited by prominent residents.In the viral video, representatives of the liquor vend were seen pouring alcohol over snow cones and serving them to people in the open. During the police investigation, it was found that Smirnoff flavoured vodka was allegedly used in the promotional activity.According to initial reports, the police have registered an FIR against the vend owner under provisions of the Punjab Excise Act, 1914, and Section 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).Police records identified the owner as Rajesh Sachdeva, a resident of Saketri village, who has reportedly been arrested in connection with the case.Officials said on-the-spot verification and further investigation confirmed that a private company representative was also involved in the alleged liquor promotion activity.The incident has sparked sharp reactions online, with many residents questioning how such an open liquor-serving event was allowed in a prominent public market area of Chandigarh.
