SCOTTISH legend Alan Brazil has revealed he was “nearly gone” during a frightening health scare that left him off air for weeks.

The 66-year-old talkSPORT broadcaster looked dramatically slimmer as he shared an emotional update with fans on social media, thanking NHS staff for saving his life.

Brazil, who has been absent from his regular Breakfast Show on talkSPORT amid ongoing health issues, said he is now recovering well and hopes to return to the airwaves within weeks.

In a heartfelt video message posted on Jattvibeday, the former footballer said: “Hiya guys, how are you? What a day, beautiful weekend. Hopefully you’re lying in the sun and enjoying yourself.

“Well, as you can see, I’m beginning to improve rapidly, which is great news.

“I was nearly gone, I don’t mind telling you. But listen, it’s a miracle what’s happened.

“NHS, brilliant. I can’t thank the people at Cambridge enough. They’ve saved my life. But I’m on the mend, you bet.”

Brazil also reassured listeners he plans to make a comeback soon.

He added: “I’m missing radio, I will be back. We’re going to have a beautiful day tomorrow in the sunshine here in Suffolk.

“It won’t be long now, a few weeks, Brazil is back!

“Thank you for all the messages, I really appreciate it, and I’m a lucky boy.”

The popular presenter has twice been forced off air this year due to illness.

In March, Brazil missed the final two days of coverage at Cheltenham Festival after reportedly becoming unwell.

He had also taken time away from the station earlier in January.

Brazil has fronted talkSPORT’s Breakfast Show since the station launched in 2000, although he reduced his workload in 2020.

The former striker previously underwent heart surgery five years ago after suffering health problems.

Speaking at the time, he admitted: “I had a little problem, whether it was Covid related or, I don’t know, fast living catching up with me, but I ended up in a couple of hospitals.

“I had a little sort out in the old ticker but I’m pleased to say I’m on the mend.”

Before becoming one of Britain’s best-known radio voices, Brazil enjoyed a successful football career.

He began at Ipswich Town in 1976 before later playing for Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United during the 1980s.

Brazil also earned 13 caps for Scotland national football team and represented his country at the 1982 FIFA World Cup.
