Experts reckon the June 12 auction in Dallas, Texas, could top the £1.16million video game record set in 2021 for a copy of Super Mario 64 Credit: BNPS

Evan Masingill, Heritage’s managing director of video games, said: “Mario is one of the most iconic characters in pop culture. He’s the face of Nintendo, and arguably all of gaming.

“For years, collectors have been searching high and low for an unopened sticker-sealed copy of Super Mario Bros. to no avail.

“For at least a decade, only two sealed copies had been known to exist, making the discovery of this third copy – the highest-graded of the three – an unbelievable find in the collecting community.

“This copy is a second printing, dating from Nintendo’s LA Test Market launch in early 1986, debuting a few months before its nationwide release.

“No first print examples are currently known to exist sealed, making this ‘gloss sticker’ second print the earliest sealed copy you can obtain.

“A game of this significance never has been offered for sale before.

“Given its status as the peak video game collectible, this easily could become the most valuable video game ever sold.”

Super Mario Bros was successor to the Mario Bros arcade game launched in 1983.

Experts reckon the June 12 auction in Dallas, Texas, could top the £1.16million video game record set in 2021 for a copy of Super Mario 64.
