Man in his 40s killed by train after escaping from police custody van on his way to court

A MAN has been killed on a train line after escaping a custody van travelling from a police station to court.

The man, in his 40s, escaped the vehicle while it was stopped on the A1 motorway, police said.

Emergency services were then called to a casualty on the tracks at Welwyn North Railway station in Hertfordshire.

Cops responding to the call said formal identification of the casualty had not yet taken place but said the family of the man had been informed of the tragedy.

A file has been prepared for the coroner.

Hertfordshire Police has referred the incident to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
