Congress on Monday questioned the quality of infrastructure projects under the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led BJP government after the newly operationalised Halwara Airport terminal in Ludhiana suffered structural damage following heavy rain and a thunderstorm, barely weeks after flight operations began.Sharing visuals of the damaged terminal building, the party alleged that poor construction quality and corruption were behind the incident.Related News: Shocking damage at Halwara Airport terminal in first major rain spell; inquiry ordered“Narendra Modi had inaugurated the terminal of Halwara Airport in Ludhiana just this February. However, such corruption occurred in the construction of the terminal that the roof could not withstand even the first rain and storm,” Congress said. The party claimed that roof panels came off from multiple places, sections of the roof broke, water started dripping inside the terminal, and several sheets were blown away or left hanging after the storm.“It is clear that under the Modi government, infrastructure is being built with extremely poor-quality materials. There’s rampant looting of public money and BJP leaders and ministers are divvying up the cash,” the party alleged. The political attack came after the newly operationalised Halwara civil terminal sustained damage during heavy rain and strong winds that hit Ludhiana on Saturday night, less than three weeks after the first commercial flight service started from the airport on May 15.Passengers and airport staff on Jattvibeday noticed water leakage from multiple locations inside the terminal building, while sections of the false ceiling and roof panels were found displaced following the downpour. The Punjab government’s Public Works Department (PWD), which supervised the construction work, attributed the damage to strong winds and a thunderstorm and said immediate repairs had been ordered to ensure passenger safety and uninterrupted airport operations.Prime Minister Narendra Modi had inaugurated the terminal building in February this year, while commercial operations at the airport started on May 15 when Air India launched its inaugural flight service between Delhi and Halwara. The terminal building was constructed by Himachal Pradesh-based private company M/S Synergy Thrislington, which specialises in pre-fabricated steel structures. The total cost of the Halwara Airport project stood at Rs 54 crore, of which around Rs 22.50 crore was spent on the terminal building, while the remaining amount went towards the tarmac, parking facilities and associated infrastructure.
