Former cop and Tamil Nadu BJP president today met party chief Nitin Nabin and is said to have conveyed his wish to part ways with the party. The 41-year-old firebrand leader had only a year ago drawn generous praise from Union Home Minister Amit Shah who called the former’s contributions to the party unprecedented and said the BJP would leverage his skills at the national level. Not just that, Shah had even paused one of his Tamil Nadu pre-election speeches in Madurai after the gathering erupted into frenzied chants when Shah mentioned Annamalai’s name.So what changed in a year for Annamalai to go for a cordial separation from the party he helped establish in Tamil Nadu.Sources say Annamalai sees no future in the BJP in the state and wishes to launch his own political enterprise to make a difference. The rise of the TVK and the inability of BJP to win even a decent share in the recent Tamil Nadu elections has led Annamalai to make up his mind to part ways, sources say. The BJP won only one seat in Tamil Nadu which has 234 MLAs in the state Assembly. It is learnt that Annamalai today conveyed to BJP chief Nitin Nabin and party general secretary organisation BL Santosh his wish to part ways on a cordial note and chart his own course in the state. The BJP is still convincing Annamalai to stay back though, say sources.Annamalai for his part feels there is scope to engage masses in Tamil Nadu where TVK is leading the government under actor-politician Joseph Vijay. There is a sense in the Annamalai camp that people may soon be disillusioned with Vijay creating space for alternative movements. Annamalai is learnt to be eager to launch a people’s movement in Tamil Nadu with support from actor Rajnikanth. He plans to later frame the movement as a political outfit but all that is in the realm of possibilities so far.As for Annamalai, his importance in the state politics is evident from the kind words Amit Shah used when replacing him in April 2025.”The Tamil Nadu BJP has received a nomination for the post of state president only from Nagendra Nainar. As the president of the Tamil Nadu BJP unit, K Annamalai has made commendable accomplishments. Whether it is carrying the policies of PM Narendra Modi to people or holding programmes of the party from village to village, Annamalai’s contribution has been unprecedented. The BJP will leverage Annamalai’s organisational skills in the party’s national framework,” Shah had said on April 11, 2025.But, Annamalai is not keen on a central role. He wants to stay in Tamil Nadu and conduct ground connect with the people. As such, Annamalai is no stranger to mass movements. As the state BJP chief, he had led a famous padyatra across Tamil Nadu to spread the BJP ideology. He wants to pick up the threads now and has not forgotten how the BJP replaced him after AIADMK’s E Palaniswamy framed former’s ouster as a precondition to return to the NDA fold. The return has not helped either the BJP which won one seat in the Assembly recently or the AIADMK which won 47 against TVK’s 108 and DMK’s 59.
