The packed aircraft passed through the water display at an airport in Ecuador

It clashes with a fire truck as it does so – prompting a quick evacuation

The plane can be seen moving beneath the water spray at Jose Joaquin de Olmedo International Airport in Guayaquil.

Soon after, the plane’s left wing smashes into the fire truck stationed nearby.

This collision resulted in visible damage to the wingtip of the aircraft – requiring extensive repairs.

Nearby crew stopped the plane’s departure after the life-threatening incident and called maintenance teams for an inspection.

The water arch ceremony is a traditional airport practice used to mark special occasions.

There were no reported injuries among passengers, crew members, or ground staff during the collision.

Due to the accident, the scheduled departure of the flight to Madrid was cancelled and passengers were told to leave the plane.

To ensure passengers reached their destinations, Iberia arranged them on another flight, either the next available service or through partner routing with different carriers.

These special occasions can be inaugural flights, aircraft arrivals, or milestone services.

In these instances, the fire and rescue vehicles create an arc of water over the taxiing aircraft.

On this occasion, the display formed was part of the welcome for Iberia’s new Airbus A350 service between Guayaquil and Madrid.

Ground crews positioned fire engines on both sides of the taxiway before the aircraft passed.

While this is generally a safe tradition when carefully coordinated, it requires precise positioning between emergency vehicles and pilots.

Airport authorities and technical investigators have opened a formal inquiry to determine how the contact occurred.

This is not the first time a water salute has caused similar issues, resulting in minor damage.

Other airlines have already banned participation in water cannon salutes precisely due to the high risk.

This comes just a few weeks after a Turkish Airlines flight was set on fire after a spark went off in the jet’s landing gear.

The flight had 277 passengers and 11 crew members on board, all of whom were evacuated down the inflatable slides.

The airport’s only runway was closed for almost two hours following the terrifying ordeal, but it has since reopened.

Several incoming flights were also suspended as the runway was checked and cleared.

A Turkish Airlines spokesperson said: “Technical inspections of the aircraft have been initiated by our teams.”

They added: “Initial assessments indicate that the smoke was caused by a technical malfunction in a hydraulic pipe.”
