Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj will felicitate the family members of those killed during Operation Bluestar 1984. A large number of devotees and visitors are expected to arrive in the holy city to take part on the 42nd anniversary, prompting the authorities to maintain high level of vigilance. This will be the first address of Giani Gargaj from the Akal Takht podium on the occasion. Last year, he refrained from delivering a public address after several Sikh organisations had expressed their reservation over his appointment. Yet, he had led the ‘ardas’ and delivered a heartfelt ‘sandesh’ (message) to the Sikh ‘qaum’ from the Akal Takht premises, while Damdami Taksal chief Harnam Singh Dhumma and Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale’s sons — Ishar Singh and Inderjit Singh — stood quietly in silent opposition. As Sikh groups accepted Gargaj as Akal Takht Jathedar during a ‘dastarbandi’ ceremony held at Takht Kesgarh Sahib in Anandpur Sahib on October 26, 2025, he does not face any opposition now.The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has made elaborate arrangements inside the Golden Temple complex, which also houses Akal Takht. Senior police personnel held a meeting with the SGPC officials and reviewed security measures to ensure smooth conduct of commemorative events.4K security personnel on toesAmritsar Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said adequate arrangements had been made to maintain law and order. Further, police personnel in civvies would be deployed to keep anti-social elements at bay and prevent any untoward incident.Around 4,000 police personnel led by 30 gazetted officers had been stationed across the city, said Bhullar, adding that five commandant-rank officers and three Deputy Commissioners had been assigned zone-wise responsibilities to supervise security arrangements. Besides, 10 teams are conducting regular patrols in the walled city.In addition to the Punjab Police, three companies of the Border Security Force (BSF), one company of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and one company of the Rapid Action Force (RAF) has been deployed as part of the elaborate security arrangements.
