As the turmoil within the Trinamool Congress (TMC) is showing no signs of easing, former West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee on Friday convened a high-level meeting at her residence. Adding to the party’s troubles, senior TMC leader and prominent minority face Firhad Hakim resigned as Mayor of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), citing his inability to effectively discharge the responsibilities of the office.Speaking to the media after the meeting, senior TMC leader and Lok Sabha MP Kalyan Banerjee termed the appointment of Ritabrata Banerjee as the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly as “illegal”.”The Leader of the Opposition is always decided by the parent political party and not by the legislature party. The Speaker’s decision to select the LoP is illegal,” Banerjee said. He added that the party would move the Calcutta High Court on Monday to challenge the legality of the appointment.Providing details of the meeting held at Mamata Banerjee’s residence, Kalyan said it was decided that Rajya Sabha MPs Derek O’Brien and Dola Sen would assist the party’s national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee in organisational matters.Banerjee said the West Bengal Pradesh Trinamool Congress Committee has been reconstituted. The party has named Chandrima Bhattacharya as state president. While Subrata Bakshi continues as vice-president in the National Working Committee. Lok Sabha MP Saayoni Ghosh will be the president of TMYC and Subhasish Chakraborty has been made party’s treasurer.Sajda Ahmed, Mamata Thakur, Nayana Bandyopadhyay and Swati Khandekar have been appointed vice-presidents. The party has also named Babar Ali, Pulak Roy, Ashima Patra, Aroop Biswas and Rajib Banerjee as state general secretaries.Kalyan added that leaders at the state-level would submit suggestions, based on which committees would be constituted to strengthen the party structure. The party has 29 MPs in the Lok Sabha and 13 members in the Rajya Sabha. After the BJP decimated the TMC in the Assembly election, the party suffered a major setback after 58 of its MLAs, led by Ritabrata Banerjee, reportedly dissented against the party leadership. Subsequently, the legislator from Uluberia Purba constituency was elected as the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly.Earlier in the day, Firhad Hakim expressed gratitude to Mamata for entrusting him with the responsibility of leading the Kolkata MC following the resignation of former mayor Sovan Chatterjee. “I am thankful to our leader Mamata Banerjee. In December 2018, I was elected by the councillors of the Kolkata MC after the abrupt resignation of former mayor Sovan Chatterjee. I carried out all my responsibilities honestly,” Hakim said.Explaining the reasons behind his resignation, the Kolkata Port MLA said he no longer felt capable of doing justice to the responsibilities associated with the post. “Now I am not able to shoulder this responsibility because I believe that the Mayor’s chair is not merely a position; it is a responsibility,” Hakim said.
