A Canadian court has let off a man without any jail time in the killing of a young Punjabi immigrant in Surrey, British Columbia, a verdict that has left the victim’s family shattered.Canada media reports said Michael Gordon Bovencamp, 46, was handed a Rs 1,500 fine, 18 months probation and a one-year driving ban for a crash that killed 33-year-old Saraj Singh on October 5, 2024.Singh, who had recently migrated to Canada from Punjab with his wife Nardeep Kaur and young son in search of a better future, died on the spot after Bovencamp’s Ford F350 truck crossed into oncoming traffic and mowed down two pedestrians near 144 Street and Hyland Drive in Surrey. The other victim suffered serious injuries.Bovencamp had admitted to consuming cannabis on the morning of the crash. However, blood tests showed his THC levels were just below the legal driving limit. The court accepted that he had likely suffered a medical emergency behind the wheel and allowed him to plead guilty to a lesser charge under the Motor Vehicle Act, dropping any criminal conviction that could have led to imprisonment. For Nardeep Kaur, the verdict has compounded her grief. In a statement, she described her husband as gentle, hardworking and loving. The couple had just arrived in Canada, hoping for a new life.“His death was sudden, violent and completely preventable, and it destroyed the life we had built together. Every day since has felt like a struggle to breathe,” she said.Saraj Singh is survived by his wife and son.
