The Congress on Wednesday accused Union Home Minister Amit Shah of orchestrating defections from the Opposition parties through inducements and alleged that the BJP was targeting leaders elected on an anti-BJP platform to strengthen its political position.Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh claimed that Shah was carrying out a sustained campaign against Opposition parties and attempting to weaken democratic institutions. In a post on X, Ramesh alleged that the Home Minister was stepping up efforts to engineer defections after facing a political setback in Parliament earlier this year.“The Union Home Minister is relentlessly attacking the Opposition and damaging Indian democracy. He is doing all this to compensate for the humiliation he suffered in the Lok Sabha on April 17, 2026, when he failed to get the delimitation Bill passed,” Ramesh said.He alleged that leaders elected just two years ago on a strong anti-BJP mandate were now being persuaded to switch sides. “His temptations are attracting many people who were elected just two years ago on a strong anti-BJP agenda and are now joining the BJP. It is being said that the inducements being offered to them are shocking,” Ramesh claimed. The Congress leader also accused Shah of running a well-resourced political operation aimed at attracting Opposition leaders. “The Home Minister is running a completely cynical campaign. It is equipped with all kinds of resources and, like the mutual fund industry, offers different schemes and products tailored to individual needs,” he said.Ramesh further remarked that there was no limit to his (Shah’s) moral decline, but asserted that Shah would not succeed in his ultimate objective. The Congress leader’s remarks came amid speculation of possible defections from the Shiv Sena (UBT) in Maharashtra.
