The incident happened off the Pacific coast of Santa Barbara as they were visiting family during Father’s Day weekend.

Robert and Kayla had heard about the sighting and rushed off, eager to locate the shark.

An uncle of one of them had deployed a drone to guide them in the right direction.

After some time in the water, the pair headed back to land – disappointed that they missed it – only to realise the shark had been tracking them the entire time.

“We paddled pretty far out…” Kayla told ABC7.

“He [Robert] said that he saw something and that we had to head back to shore right now.

“But I didn’t see it because I was just looking forward, paddling. So I didn’t know what he saw, how big it was, so we just went straight back.

“But that was a little nerve-racking.”

Robert recalled feeling “a mix of adrenaline… and excitement” as he and Kayla ventured off to find the shark.

He described it as “a big deal,” adding: “Like probably shouldn’t be doing that.

“There’s a moment it becomes real, especially when I saw the shark.”

Kayla went out twice to try to find the shark. She said she would go and do it again, and hopes she can find an even bigger shark next time.

Their enthusiasm for an encounter with a predator comes just weeks after a surfer was mauled by a “gigantic” shark in California.

Witnesses said it could clearly be spotted from the shore “as if it was a whale”.

The 39-year-old man was rushed to hospital after the animal attacked.

Early reports suggest the victim was able to make his way out of the water after the mauling. He had injuries on both legs.

One witness told Mendocino Coast News that the shark seemed to come back for a second bite of its victim.

He said the predator circled even as rescuers were helping the man.
