Norway vs France preview
The temptation is to build this game up as a clash of the titans between Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe but whether it will live up to such a billing remains to be seen.
Group I is unique in that it is the only foursome that features two teams on six points after two games.
Both Norway and France beat Iraq and Senegal to divide the group in half between the haves and the have-nots.
Consequently, this evening’s game in Massachusetts is a low-stakes affair for both sides as their places in the round of 32 are already assured.
But it’s not a complete dead rubber as a win for the Vikings would see them leapfrog Les Bleus to claim top spot.
That being said, Stale Solbakken hinted at rotation after his side’s energy-sapping win over Senegal, citing several players suffering with cramp and a quick turnaround as factors to consider.
France are also expected to make several changes with Maxence Lacroix, Malo Gusto, Aurelin Tchouameni, Theo Hernandez and Desire Doue rumoured to start.
Looking back at previous tournaments, Didier Deschamps tends to rotate in the third group game if qualification is guaranteed.
While this may not be the blockbuster clash it might have been had there been more at stake, fans in attendance will surely witness Haaland and Mbappe in action as both are chasing Lionel Messi in the Golden Boot race with four goals each to the Argentine No10’s five — just don’t be surprised if they are limited to 45-60 minutes.
The 2022 runners-up started their campaign slowly with a disjointed first half against Senegal but have since purred with the captain hungry for goals and Michael Olise arguably the standout creator at the tournament so far.
As for Norway, they top scored in European qualifying and have displayed their firepower on the biggest stage with seven goals in their first two outings.
Manchester City’s No9 hogs the spotlight but they are far from a one-man team with Martin Odegaard, Antonio Nusa and Alexander Sorloth all capable of decisive actions — the latter plays as a wide target man almost, something most full-backs have rarely encountered.
More cynical observers might label this a glorified friendly but it’s important to remember this is still a World Cup game involving many players desperate to prove they are worthy of starting the knockout ties.
