Uruguay needed at least a point from their final game to stand a chance of progressing to the knockout rounds of the tournament.
But their campaign came to an end as they lost 1-0 to reigning European champions Spain.
The killer goal could have been avoided as goalkeeper Fernando Muslera should have done better to stop Alex Baena’s effort.
Uruguay ended the game with 10-men as Agustín Canobbio saw red to further rub salt in the wounds of the two-time World Champions.
