The Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Saturday alleged that party general secretary Abhishek Banerjee was attacked by BJP supporters during his visit to Sonarpur.Reacting to the alleged attack, former Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee said, “Rulers became killers-shame on you BJP! (sic)”Abhishek, who had gone to meet families affected by the post-poll violence, including a deceased party worker, claimed there was an attempt on his life and vowed legal action over the incident. He claimed that the entire episode had been captured on camera, and the matter would be raised before the Calcutta High Court as well as the West Bengal Governor.Accusing the BJP of orchestrating the attack, the TMC leader questioned the absence of police personnel at the spot. He added that the incident reflected the prevailing political atmosphere in the state after the recent Assembly elections. The TMC MP had earlier visited the family of Biswajit Pattanayak, whom the party described as a dedicated worker who was allegedly killed in post-poll violence. In a social media post, Banerjee said the killing highlighted a growing atmosphere of violence and fear in West Bengal after the BJP came to power in the state. He said the victim’s family was seeking justice and asserted that the party would continue raising its voice against political violence and ensure accountability for those responsible. The incident triggered sharp political reactions, with senior TMC leader Derek O’Brien questioning why Banerjee’s security cover had allegedly been withdrawn on the counting day and the police personnel were missing during the incident. In a post on X, O’Brien claimed that the Lok Sabha MP’s life was at risk and sought an explanation from the Union Home Minister over the security arrangements.TMC MP Sagarika Ghose also condemned the alleged attack. Describing it as unacceptable, she questioned the absence of police protection for a senior Opposition leader.Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge also criticised the incident, saying violence against political leaders could not be justified under any circumstances. He alleged that inadequate police protection for an Opposition leader raised serious questions. He further urged both the Centre and state government to ensure security and prevent such incidents.
