Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge was on Monday reappointed as the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha following his re-election to the Upper House and after taking oath once again as a Member of the Council of States.Kharge said he would continue holding the government accountable and raising the concerns of the people in Parliament.Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman C P Radhakrishnan administered the oath to Kharge in the Chairman’s chamber in Parliament House. Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were present during the ceremony.The Rajya Sabha Secretariat formally notified Kharge’s reappointment through a parliamentary bulletin issued on Monday.“Consequent upon the expiry of his term of office as a Member of the Rajya Sabha on the 25th June, 2026, Shri Mallikarjun Kharge ceased to be the Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha w.e.f. the 26th June, 2026,” the bulletin said.It further said: “On his re-election to the Rajya Sabha w.e.f. 26th June, 2026, the Chairman, Rajya Sabha, has accorded recognition to Shri Mallikarjun Kharge, Member and Leader of the Indian National Congress (INC) in Rajya Sabha, as the Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha w.e.f. the 26th June, 2026, in accordance with the provisions of Section 2 of the Salary and Allowances of Leaders of Opposition in Parliament Act, 1977 and for all purposes of the said Act.”Calling it a matter of “immense pride and responsibility” to continue serving in the Upper House as Leader of the Opposition, Kharge said the Opposition would continue to raise the “burning concerns, aspirations and voices of the people” with sincerity and determination.“We will continue to raise the burning concerns, aspirations and voices of the people with sincerity, conviction and determination. That remains our foremost responsibility, and I shall discharge it with the utmost commitment,” Kharge said.The veteran Congress leader also expressed gratitude to Rajya Sabha Chairman C P Radhakrishnan and Deputy Chairman Harivansh for their support and cooperation.Kharge thanked the Congress leadership, particularly Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, besides party MPs, workers and supporters for their faith and support throughout his public and parliamentary life.He also acknowledged the cooperation extended by floor leaders of various political parties, particularly allies in the INDIA bloc and the wider Opposition, and expressed hope for stronger coordination among opposition parties during the upcoming Monsoon Session.“We look forward to even stronger coordination during the forthcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament so that, together, we can make the government of the day more accountable,” he said.
