An investigation into the full circumstances of the ordeal has been launched.
Ukraine’s state railway operator Ukrzaliznytsia said: “All circumstances of the accident will be established based on the results of the inspection.”
The train was reportedly on the Rivne-Zdolbuniv route at the time of the deadly collision.
The affected section of the railway has been closed whilst the probe takes place.
It comes after at least 18 people people were killed and dozens were injured after Russia unleashed large-scale missile and drone strikes on Kyiv.
Children were among a “significant number” of casualties as a wave of strikes rocked the Ukrainian capital.
Volodymyr Zelensky had warned that the Kremlin was plotting a “massive” attack just hours earlier, after it had suffered several humiliating blows at the hands of Ukraine in recent weeks.
The Ukrainian president said: “The enemy is once again deliberately targeting residential areas and killing civilians.”
