India will participate in the inaugural United Nations Global Dialogue on Artificial Intelligence (AI) Governance in Geneva on July 6-7, with Minister of State for External Affairs and Environment, Forest and Climate Change Kirti Vardhan Singh leading the Indian delegation.The high-level meeting marks the launch of the UN’s first universal, multi-stakeholder forum on AI governance, established under the UN General Assembly Resolution 79/325 following the adoption of the Global Digital Compact as part of the Pact of the Future in September 2024.The dialogue aims to advance international cooperation on AI governance while complementing national, regional and multilateral efforts to ensure the technology is developed and deployed responsibly. It will also focus on strengthening capacities, particularly in developing countries, to harness AI for sustainable development.According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the Geneva meeting will receive the inaugural annual report of the Independent International Scientific Panel on AI (IISPA), which offers the first independent scientific assessment of AI’s capabilities, emerging opportunities and associated risks.Delegates will also deliberate on AI’s social and economic implications, bridging the global AI divide, promoting safe and trustworthy AI, and safeguarding human rights in the context of artificial intelligence.India has played an active role in shaping global discussions on AI governance. The UN co-chairs held one of their in-person stakeholder consultations on the sidelines of the AI Impact Summit hosted in New Delhi in February this year.The meeting comes amid growing international efforts to establish global norms for the development and governance of artificial intelligence as governments seek to balance innovation with safety, accountability and ethical safeguards.
