THE days seem brighter, the drinks taste sweeter and the 9-5 has never felt shorter. It can only mean England are safely through to the World Cup quarter-finals, and we get to watch other nations sweat it out with smug satisfaction. For once.

OK, there is an Erling Haaland-shaped problem looming in the distance, but that’s Saturday’s problem. In the meantime, the final four nations will battle for the last two quarter-final spots, starting with holders Argentina against Egypt in Atlanta before the odd couple of Switzerland and Colombia see us home.

We have just ten games left at this World Cup, which means the robot is fast running out of time to reel me in in our experiment to see whether an AI football predictor is capable of out-tipping a seasoned veteran recovering from about three cardiac arrests after England’s trip to the Azteca.

Heading into the final stretch, I lead the machine on both profit units and return on investment, but trail in the singles tally. My editor refuses to delete that column, though. Anyway, you can keep track of the scoring in the table below.

The pro’s picks – Jattvibeday 7th July 2026

Spare a moment for the tipping machine, who will never experience the unbridled joy of complaining about Dan Burn coming on, only to be singing his name at the top of your lungs at 4am on a Monday. Pure ecstasy.

Here are my predictions for the final two last-16 matches, put together on about two hours’ sleep in clothes that will need to be incinerated later today.

Argentina vs Egypt – Argentina to win to nil at 14/15

It was all going way too smoothly for Argentina, wasn’t it? We’ve seen enough major tournaments where a nation looks to be cruising before a swift punch on the nose sends them packing. Fortunately for Lionel Scaloni’s side, that punch came courtesy of Cape Verde and they still found a way through.

It might sound strange, but I actually think that was a blessing in disguise. They got away with one, and it should have been enough to jolt them into life before the business end of the tournament. That starts against an Egypt side who aren’t exactly prolific.

Mohamed Salah was their top scorer and top assister in qualifying, but he looks well short of full fitness after a quiet display against Australia. With their talisman struggling, I think Argentina return to their miserly best and book their place in the quarter-finals without conceding, just as they have in five of their last seven victories.

Switzerland vs Colombia – Under 1.5 goals at 33/20

I’ll be honest, it’s been difficult to get a proper read on Colombia at these finals. Especially for us in the UK when none of their matches have kicked off before midnight and three have started at 3am.

One thing is clear, though – they don’t neglect their defensive work. Nestor Lorenzo’s side have quietly gone about their business, winning three of their four matches while conceding just once. Of the teams left in the tournament, only Spain and Argentina have a lower expected goals against tally.

Switzerland aren’t far behind either. It took them four games to keep a clean sheet, but they’ve actually defended very well, with an expected goals against figure of just 3.07 and two of the three goals they’ve conceded arriving deep into stoppage time. That feels like the perfect recipe for a low-scoring affair.

AI picks for Jattvibeday 7th July 2026

What’s the collective term for a gang of robots? Swarm? Bunch? Fleet?

OK, we’re going with fleet. I’d be very surprised if this fleet of robots matched my double today. Evidently it doesn’t know it’s trailing with just ten games left – in fact, it doesn’t know it’s trailing at all because I’ve completely invented this rivalry.

Anyway, the fleet will stick to its tried-and-tested method, crunching through thousands of simulations and variables before settling on whatever it thinks is the most likely outcome, regardless of the price. It’s my job to work out why and decide whether it’s actually any good.

Argentina vs Egypt – Argentina -1.5 Asian Handicap at 11/10

Yep, I like it. The AI fleet has branched out, not simply going for an Argentina win or both teams to score for a change. Instead, it’s expecting the holders to get the job done comfortably, with all nine AI models backing Lionel Scaloni’s side to win by at least two goals.

Aside from sleepwalking through their Round of 32 clash with Cape Verde, Argentina have looked one of the strongest teams at these finals, while Egypt are heavily reliant on a less-than-fit Mohamed Salah for their attacking threat.

Switzerland vs Colombia – Under 2.5 goals at 6/11

That uncharacteristic shot at something above odds-on has been quickly forgotten. This is exactly the sort of selection the robot loves, and I can’t really poke any holes in it. All nine AI models expect fewer than three goals. I went for under 1.5 because I’m greedy. The bot has no such human flaws.

The World Cup verdict and tally – Monday 7th July 2026

There’s not a huge amount between us today. We both fancy Argentina, we both expect a cagey affair between Switzerland and Colombia and, if I’m being honest, I quite like the robot’s handicap selection as a bit of insurance if Egypt do nick a goal.

The difference, as usual, is the price. My double comes in at 4.12/1, while Acca-Bot settles for 2.24/1. If Argentina win comfortably and Switzerland vs Colombia finishes 0-0, we’ll both be happy enough. If not, I’ll just pull the plug on the bots. Job done.
