Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred Indonesia’s highest civilian honour, the Bintang Adipurna of the Republic of Indonesia, on Tuesday. He became the second Indian PM after Jawaharlal Nehru to receive the prestigious distinction.Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto presented the award to Modi in recognition of his leadership and exceptional contribution to strengthening the India-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.Accepting the honour, Modi dedicated it to the people of both countries and described it as a tribute to their centuries-old civilisational ties. “I accept the Bintang Adipurna of the Republic of Indonesia with great humility. This honour belongs to the people of India. It reflects the warmth and affection of the people of Indonesia. It is also a tribute to the historic and deeply rooted ties between India and Indonesia,” the Prime Minister said.He thanked President Prabowo, the Indonesian Government and the people of Indonesia for conferring the country’s highest civilian decoration upon him. The honour came during Modi’s visit to Indonesia, where the two countries elevated their strategic partnership through a series of agreements covering defence, critical minerals, technology, healthcare, maritime cooperation and education.The Bintang Adipurna is Indonesia’s highest civilian award and is conferred on individuals for extraordinary service in advancing the country’s interests and strengthening international relations.The honour places Modi alongside Nehru, who had also received Indonesia’s highest civilian decoration, underscoring the enduring warmth in bilateral ties that date back to the early years of India’s and Indonesia’s independence.
