France vs Morocco preview
It’s deja vu in Boston tonight as France and Morocco collide in a repeat of the 2022 World Cup semi-final in Qatar.
The French were the victors that day, edging past their African opponents 2-0 courtesy of goals from Theo Hernandez and Randal Kolo Muani.
Another win to nil wouldn’t be overly surprising today given Didier Deschamps’ side have already achieved that three times in North America, against Iraq, Sweden and Paraguay.
France steamrolled their way through the group stage with scintillating football, scoring 10 goals in the process before putting another three past Sweden in the Round of 32.
But they showed they were capable of doing things the hard way when faced with all the tricks and dark arts deployed by Paraguay in the previous round, eventually going through thanks to a Kylian Mbappe penalty.
The Real Madrid striker now has seven goals at these finals, while France are unbeaten in their last 12 competitive matches, drawing only once and winning 11 by an aggregate score of 32-6.

They are now two wins away from reaching three consecutive World Cup finals, a feat only ever achieved by Brazil and West Germany.
Though they arrive as odds-on favourites, getting past Morocco could be harder than it looks.
The Atlas Lions have already proven their run to the final four in 2022 was no fluke. They upset the odds by dumping the Netherlands out of the competition before ruthlessly dispatching hosts Canada, scoring three from their four shots on target.
In their last 12 World Cup matches, Morocco have beaten the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal and Belgium, and lost only to France and Croatia, so another huge European scalp is well within their grasp.
Ismael Saibari, who scored in all three of Morocco’s group-stage matches and buried the winning penalty against the Netherlands, travelled to Boston with the squad but remains a huge doubt after pulling up with a hamstring injury against Canada.

France to win and under 2.5 goals is my pick at 5/2 with Betfair.
Morocco have built their recent World Cup success on making life miserable for Europe’s biggest sides. Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Croatia and the Netherlands have all struggled to break them down over the last two tournaments, with the Atlas Lions conceding just five goals across seven games against that group and France since 2022.
Paraguay showed there’s a blueprint to frustrate Didier Deschamps’ side too. France didn’t register a shot on target until the 55th minute and recorded their lowest xG return of the tournament before eventually squeezing through thanks to a Kylian Mbappe penalty.
I still think France have enough quality to edge into the semi-finals, just as they did four years ago, but Morocco don’t make life easy. Another tight, low-scoring affair feels far more likely than a French procession, especially with Ismael Saibari looking a major doubt.
