India sees jump in foreign student enrolments; Nepal, UAE lead: AISHE report

The total number of foreign students enrolled in higher education is 58,134, as per the report by the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) 2023-24. This is a significant jump from 48,726 students in 2022-23 report. The data also points to the gap in the implementation of National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, six years after its launch.The report says the foreign students have come from 173 different countries. In 2023-24, the highest share of foreign students was from Nepal (24.1%), followed by UAE (7.0%), United States (5.9%), Bangladesh (5.9%), Nigeria (5.5%), and Zimbabwe (4.0%).The highest number of foreign students are enrolled in undergraduate courses (73.6%) followed by postgraduate courses (16.8%). 4,930 females and 27,849 males were enrolled in the undergraduate courses.The report also shows maximum students have opted for Arts (32.1%), followed by science (13.5%), Engineering & Technology (12.9%) and Commerce (12.0%) in the UG level. At PG level, maximum students are enrolled in Social Science stream (18.6%) followed by Management (18.2%).However, six years after the launch of NEP 2020, only 56% universities have introduced the 4-year UG Programme and only 58% have adopted the National Curriculum and Credit Framework for Undergraduate Programmes. While 49% universities are offering multiple entry and exit in academic programmes and only 6% have launched online programmes.At the university level, there is an increase of 33.4% in enrolment from 2019-20 to 2023-24. Considering the type of the university, there is an increase of 23.5% enrolment in State public universities and 42.2% in Institutes of National Importance (INIs).
