After recording the season’s heaviest rain on Thursday, Chandigarh continued to remain under active monsoon conditions on Friday with intermittent moderate to heavy rain through the night, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert for the city.Residents woke up to another wet morning as rain continued through the night following Thursday’s widespread showers that had left several roads and low-lying areas waterlogged. At 7.22 am, the IMD issued a Red Alert Nowcast, forecasting a moderate to intense spell of rain over Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula, along with adjoining areas, during the next two to three hours. The advisory asked people to remain in safe places during thunderstorm activity, avoid taking shelter under trees, stay away from weak structures and suspend outdoor activities until conditions improved. The fresh warning came less than 24 hours after Chandigarh recorded 34 mm rainfall between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm on Thursday, the highest rainfall recorded in Punjab during the day and the third highest in the Punjab-Haryana region after Yamunanagar (54 mm) and Palwal (38.5 mm).The continuing rain kept conditions favourable for further precipitation during the day, with waterlogging reported from several vulnerable stretches where storm-water drains and road gullies were unable to clear runoff quickly. The IMD has retained the yellow alert for Chandigarh till Monday, forecasting heavy rain at isolated places accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph. No weather warning has been issued from Tuesday onwards, indicating a likely decline in rain activity, though monsoon showers are expected to continue. An IMD spokesperson said, “The southwest monsoon remains active over Chandigarh. High moisture availability and favourable atmospheric conditions are supporting repeated spells of rain. The city is likely to witness intermittent rain through Monday, with isolated heavy spells. Rainfall activity is expected to reduce from Tuesday.”Weather Alert Colour CodesYellow: Be Aware: Weather may affect routine activities. Keep updated and exercise caution.Orange: Be Prepared: Weather is likely to cause disruption. Be ready to take protective action.Red: Take Action: Severe weather is expected or occurring. Follow official advisories and avoid unnecessary travel or outdoor activity.
