Turpin is a hugely experienced referee and has previously taken charge of both a Champions League final in 2021 between Liverpool and Real Madrid, as well as a Europa League final between Manchester United and Villarreal in 2021.

The official previously spoke about how he never expected to take charge of such important games when he was beginning his career.

He explained: “I never said to myself that I would referee a European final one day.

“From the start, I preferred to set myself small targets and challenges along the way.

“I’ve never had a particular role model as a referee, but I’ve watched other referees and taken little bits of what they do and incorporated them into my own refereeing.”

At Euro 2024, he officiated England‘s group stage clash against Slovenia, which ended in a goalless draw.

And earlier at this World Cup, Turpin was the man in charge for England’s 4-2 win over Croatia.

Some of you may think that Turpin looks familiar despite not even knowing his name.

That could be because a lot of supporters have likened his appearance to that of Arsenal and Belgium star Leandro Trossard.

What happened between Thomas Tuchel and Clement Turpin?

Clement Turpin has a CV better than most modern day referees, but England boss Thomas Tuchel can’t have been too happy when he saw that the Frenchman was put in charge of the Three Lions’ crucial match.

That is because of an incident three years ago, when Tuchel’s Bayern Munich faced Manchester City in a Champions League quarter-final.

Turpin sent off the German in the match after two acts of dissent.

First, he was booked for sarcastically applauding the official after a decision, before being dismissed for another show of dissent.

After the match, Tuchel said: “The referee, unfortunately, was Grade E.

“I’d give him a one out of 10. He was absolutely terrible. It’s unbelievable at this level.

“He was whistling for everything and anything. Everything was against us.

“In the end, we were never in a position to turn things around with three men against us. That’s a fact.”

Bayern drew that match 1-1, losing 4-1 on aggregate to be dumped out of Europe by Pep Guardiola‘s side, who won the treble that season.
