The Excise Department on Friday reportedly conducted raids at distilleries linked to Congress MLA Rana Gurjeet Singh in Amritsar and Tarn Taran districts. Officials have not issued any statement on the searches. The raids coincided with a meeting of senior Congress leaders at Singh’s Chandigarh residence. The gathering was held ahead of discussions with AICC general secretary Bhupesh Baghel and included several disgruntled party leaders.Reacting to the searches, Rana Gurjeet Singh said his family was engaged in a legitimate business and there was nothing unusual about inspections. “We are in business. Raids are bound to happen,” he told mediapersons. However, he noted that the timing of the action, just before the Congress meeting, raised questions. He maintained that his businesses had always complied with legal requirements and insisted he had nothing to hide.He stopped short of directly accusing the government of political vendetta but suggested the coincidence was noteworthy.
