Good news for medical aspirants: MBBS seats in India cross 1.36 lakh in 2026, 7 per cent up from 2025

In good news for medical aspirants, the MBBS seat tally in India has crossed the 1.36 lakh mark, clocking a 7 per cent raise from 2025. As against a total of 1,28,976 MBBS seats available across 818 medical colleges in India for the academic year 2025–26, there will be 13,6939 seats available for the 2026-27 session across 823 colleges — 441 government and 382 private.Of the total seats available this year, 1,27,028 are through the renewal system and 9,911 have been added.Government medical colleges will offer 63,296 seats (61,185 renewed and 2,111 new), private medical colleges will offer 73,643 seats (65,843 renewed and 7,800 new).These details have been published by the National Medical Commission (NMC) in the much-awaited Seat Matrix for Undergraduate (MBBS) Courses for the Academic Year 2026-27.This table excludes seats in Institutes of National Importance (INIs) such as AIIMS, JIPMER PUducherry and PGI Chandigarh, bringing relief to lakhs of aspiring medical students ahead of the counselling process.
