Manchester United were also targeting the starlet, as well as Liverpool.

Talks were held between Benfica and the Blues, with an initial £52million proposal including Armando Broja rejected by the Portuguese side.

But Chelsea were informed that they must meet Silva’s £87m release clause in order to sign him.

According to reports in 2024, the Red Devils made the defender their number one summer transfer target.

The Benfica academy product’s contract expires in 2027.

At 22, he has already made 233 appearances for the club, scoring 15 goals and providing five assists.

The youngster has also won 20 caps for Portugal and was a member of their 2022 World Cup squad, but not this time around.

Benfica reportedly came out to back Silva’s omission, posting a heartfelt message on social media.

Roberto Martinez then publicly said that Silva would be top of the list to be called if any defender suffers a fitness issue at the 2026 World Cup.

Portugal were knocked out of this edition of the World Cup following Mikel Merino’s goal for Spain.
