Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday criticised the AAP government in Punjab over the alleged poor law and order situation and corruption, dubbing the ruling regime as “kattar beiman” (utterly dishonest). The PM was addressing a rally after inaugurating the revamped Jalandhar Cantonment railway station and laying stones for infrastructure projects worth Rs 5,470 crore.Modi said, “Punjab was a land ruled by Maharaja Ranjit Singh under whose rule there was prosperity, security and harmony among all communities. Everyone knows what is happening here now. The law and order situation has deteriorated. Incidents of firing, extortion, gang war and drug smuggling have become rampant. It has become increasing difficult to run business in this state.”Attacking AAP, the PM said, “The party in power had claimed that it will change the politics of the country. Their Health Minister was removed on corruption charges. Another minister is caught up in charges of money laundering. The funds that the Centre has been pumping have been misused. The budget of the state is being used to pay interest on loans that it has acquired. They are using their own sticker on Centre-funded schemes.”The PM took a jibe over the AAP’s recent launch of the Mawan Dhiyan Satkar Yojana, saying, “The women of Punjab should have got Rs 50,000 in their accounts by now.”Countering the attack, AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal said the PM must answer questions on the donation theft at the Ram Temple and clear Punjab’s dues of around Rs 50,000 crore. He also took a swipe at the Congress, saying, “Their ‘kissa kursi ka’ is not coming to an end. Their leaders are least bothered about the interests of the state.”The PM also targeted the SAD, the BJP’s former alliance partner. “Their situation is more or less the same. They are also caught up in their own interests. They are least bothered about Punjab. Only the BJP can bring Punjab back on the track of development, make it self-dependent and increase investment opportunities and employability,” he said, signalling that the BJP would go solo in the coming Assembly elections. He concluded his speech by saying, “Modi har dum har pal Punjab ke logon ke saath hai (Modi is with the people of Punjab at every step, every moment).” The crowd cheered him.His opening lines in Punjabi too had brought applause, “Aj Punjab di iss Guruan peeran wali dharti te tuhade sarian de vich aa ke meinu maan mehsus ho reha hai. Punjabiyo, kiven ho? Charhdi Kala vich ho?”.He also stole the limelight donning a green turban, symbolic with Punjab farmers. He also flagged off a train to Varanasi, before which he spent some time with Sant Niranjan Dass, chief of Dera Sachkhand Ballan, who was aboard.
