As Delhi Police shifted climate activist Sonam Wangchuk from the Jantar Mantar protest site to Safdarjung Hospital on Saturday morning, the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) attempted to keep the agitation alive by announcing a fresh indefinite hunger strike, even as its leaders’ alleged detentions and protesters claimed police action at the site. The day’s developments unfolded rapidly after Wangchuk, who has been on an indefinite hunger strike for the past 21 days in support of students demanding Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation over alleged irregularities in competitive examinations, including the NEET paper leak that led to the examination’s cancellation, was taken to the hospital. As he was being escorted from the protest site, Wangchuk told the officials, “They don’t understand this is not a disease or disorder. They themselves chosen path. And a person on fast is not the same as somebody who. Please don’t get into political things. I understand, I understand there must be pressure on you. Please don’t get into political things.”Related news: ‘No treatment without my consent’: Sonam Wangchuk’s wife pushes back after his hospitalisationCourt has already said he should be monitored, not hospitalized. Please don’t get into political things, Dr Satish Lamba said, who has been monitoring him daily. The immediate political flashpoint emerged after CJP’s founder Abhijeet Dipke announced that he would continue the protest. “I am starting an indefinite hunger strike beginning right now,” Dipke said. The announcement came amid a standoff between protest organisers and the Delhi Police over Wangchuk’s removal from the protest venue. While the police maintained that Wangchuk’s hospitalisation was carried out in compliance with a Delhi High Court order directing monitoring of his health, Dipke alleged that the activist was “taken away forcefully”. As officers arrived to take him into custody, Dipke told them, “Please don’t get into political things.”The situation at Jantar Mantar remained tense through the morning. Electricity supply to the protest site was disconnected hours after Wangchuk was shifted to hospital, while police also moved to clear the area. Some students present at the site claimed they were subjected to a lathicharge during the operation. The developments also coincided with allegations by the organisers that several key faces of the protest were prevented from participating. According to Dipke, he allegedly said, he was placed under house arrest, while he and other members were gone to freshen up, reportedly at a three-star hotel, alongside Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka at the protest site and were reportedly kept in a house arrest-like situation as Wangchuk was being taken from Jantar Mantar to Safdarjung Hospital. With Wangchuk no longer at the protest venue, the announcement of Dipke’s indefinite fast signalled the organisers’ attempt to sustain the agitation, even as the protest site witnessed police action and mounting claims of restrictions on those associated with the movement. The electricity of the protest site has been cut-off, protestors told The Tribune. The hospital administration of Safdarjung Hospital told The Tribune that Wangchuk was under the care of doctors.
