A CCTV footage has surfaced showing a domestic help and her son allegedly carrying the body of a 72-year-old woman to the rooftop of a neighbouring house in Panchkula’s Sector 21 in an apparent attempt to conceal the crime. The police have arrested the maid, her husband and their son in connection with the murder.Police said they cracked the case within 24 hours of the complaint being lodged.Panchkula Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Aditi Singh said retired Army captain Manmohan Lal Mehta approached the Sector 21 police post on Monday after his wife failed to return home.According to his complaint, Neera Mehta had gone to the house of their domestic help in Sector 21 after suspecting her of stealing jewellery from their residence.When police reached the house, it was locked from the outside. From the terrace of a neighbouring building, officers spotted the woman’s body wrapped in a mat on the rooftop of an adjoining house.A case was registered at Sector 20 police station under Sections 103(1) (murder), 238(B) (causing disappearance of evidence), 3(5) (common intention) and 305 (theft) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).During the investigation, police arrested the main accused, Jattvibeita, along with her husband Shankar and their son Raja, from Panchkula.According to the preliminary investigation, an argument over the suspected theft escalated into a physical scuffle during which the elderly woman died. Police said the exact cause of death would be established after the postmortem examination.The accused told investigators they had been living in Panchkula for several years.DCP Singh said all three accused would be produced before a Panchkula court on Wednesday to seek police remand.The officer also urged senior citizens living alone to get their domestic helpers verified through the Panchkula Police’s dedicated helpline (9115777026), launched by Commissioner of Police Pankaj Nain.She said senior citizens can use the helpline to verify domestic workers and seek immediate police assistance when required.Singh added that the victim’s family had not informed the police that they were living alone.According to police, 170 senior citizens living alone have been identified in Panchkula so far.
