An unidentified man was shot dead by the Border Security Force (BSF) after he allegedly attempted to cross the border fence towards Pakistan in the Daoke area along the India-Pakistan border in Amritsar district, officials said.The incident took place around 10.30 pm last night in the jurisdiction of Border Out Post (BOP) Daoke of the BSF and under Gharinda police station.According to information, the BSF jawans noticed the movement of an unidentified person approaching the border fence from the Indian side. The troops challenged him and asked him to stop.However, the man allegedly ignored the warnings and attempted to cross the border fence towards Pakistan. The BSF personnel subsequently opened fire, killing him on the spot. A search of the deceased and the surrounding area was conducted following the firing.Police sources said no contraband, suspicious material or identity document was recovered from the spot. The identity and nationality of the deceased were yet to be ascertained.The incident assumes significance given the heightened security along the Punjab border amid continued attempts at cross-border smuggling and infiltration.
