In further signs of a possible pre-poll alliance in Punjab, senior BJP leader and Punjab BJP core committee member RP Singh today met Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal in New Delhi.RP Singh called on Sukhbir at the latter’s residence in Sultanpur to enquire about his health.Sukhbir Badal has been recuperating at his Delhi farmhouse since he was attacked in Nanded, Maharashtra. The meeting came shortly after SAD leaders Harsimrat Badal and Bikram Singh Majithia signalled the possibility of a pact, with Majithia saying that the people of Punjab wanted the two parties to reunite.Speaking to The Tribune, RP Singh said he shared concerns over the current law and order situation in the border state and the need to regroup for the development of Punjab.”The current situation in Punjab is precarious. The 2027 elections in the state are no longer about who will win or lose. They are about saving Punjab,” Singh told this correspondent.Asked about a possible alliance between the two parties, which separated in September 2020, RP Singh signalled positive movement. He said the alliance issue was discussed during his meeting with Sukhbir Badal and that the only requirement was for the Shiromani Akali Dal to remain “positive, flexible and not rigid”.Singh said an alliance could mature with reasonable give and take. The SAD-BJP alliance was also discussed ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections but failed to materialise after the Akali Dal pushed for a larger share of the 13 Lok Sabha seats in the state. This time too, the key to a workable alliance, if it happens, will be a “repeatable understanding between partners”, Singh said.Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah have already indicated that the BJP will no longer remain in the “chhota bhai” role in Punjab.
