FIREFIGHTERS are battling a huge house blaze after flames ripped through a two-storey semi-detached home.

Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters have been scrambled to tackle the inferno – which has also engulfed a car.

Part of the ground floor, first floor and roof are alight at the property on Mount Pleasant Road in New Malden, Greater London.

A car parked in the front garden has also caught alight from the flames.

Station Commander Steve McGhie said the fire was producing smoke which had affected the surrounding area.

He said: “The fire is producing smoke that’s affected the local area, residents nearby are advised to keep their windows and doors closed where possible.

“One of the Brigade’s 32-metre turntable ladders is being deployed as a water tower, allowing crews to tackle the flames from above.”

The Brigade said its 999 Control officers received the first of 24 calls alerting them to the fire at 9.36pm.

Crews were sent from Surbiton, Kingston, Sutton, Wimbledon and surrounding fire stations.

Firefighters remain at the scene as they battle to bring the blaze under control.

The cause of the fire is not known at this stage.
