Villages and vital roads have been left flattened and buried beneath the relentless wave as the flood tears through communities downstream.
The catastrophe has sparked a desperate search for survivors, with rescuers battling treacherous weather, raging water and fresh landslides.
Nepali police say 389 people have died, while hundreds more are feared trapped or missing in the devastation.
Nepal’s disaster authority said hundreds of people were still missing, including more than 1000 tourists and foreigners.
The Nepal Tourism Board separately said dozens of British nationals are part of those who remain missing.
Confusion initially engulfed the disaster after Nepal’s foreign minister said an earthquake had been reported shortly before the landslide.

Rescuers carry victims to safety
The US Geological Survey first recorded what appeared to be a magnitude 4.4 earthquake, before dramatically revising its assessment.
But the USGS later confirmed the event was instead a “glacial collapse and debris flow” which caused “subsequent catastrophic impacts downstream”.
Scientists believe the collapse may have triggered a devastating sequence in which falling ice and rock blocked the river before a huge wall of water and debris burst through.
Professor Mike Searle, of Oxford University, said: “I think the sheer wave of debris suggests there was a landslide first, the water built up, [which] dammed the river, and then it burst in one huge great flood.”

Now a fresh nightmare is looming upstream, where a massive blockage of water and debris is being held back near the Nepal-China border.
Evacuation orders have been issued for Jilong port amid fears the improvised dam could suddenly burst, unleashing another killer surge downstream.
The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development warned: “Such blockage can create a secondary hazard if impounded water is suddenly released.”
Rescuers are racing against the clock, with more than 13,000 Nepali army and police personnel mobilised and at least 573 people rescued in a major military operation.
Among the desperate families waiting for news are those of missing British nationals, including a 13-year-old girl and her parents who are believed to have been travelling with a group of 17 trekkers when the disaster struck.
