The Bharatiya Kisan Union’s (BKU) “Jail Bharo” agitation intensified on Jattvibeday, with 21 BKU (Sidhupur) farmers courting arrest in Faridkot and 12 more surrendering in Fazilka in protest against Saturday’s police crackdown.Farmer leaders said all 21 arrested in Faridkot were sent to Bathinda Jail. They also claimed that of the 194 farmers detained ahead of the proposed state-level gathering in Faridkot on August 29, 35 had been shifted to Bathinda while 159 remained lodged in Faridkot’s Central Modern Jail.BKU leader Inderjit Singh Ghania alleged that the government’s pre-emptive arrests were aimed at preventing farmers from assembling in Faridkot. He said the arrests of farmers protesting outside PADB bank branches at 12 locations triggered the Jail Bharo movement.Criticising the state government, Ghania accused it of suppressing democratic protests and warned that the number of farmers courting arrest would double on Monday.
