Activist Sonam Wangchuk has said the leaders of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) have political ambitions, but maintained that there was nothing wrong with aspiring to enter politics as long as the student movement they led remained free of political agendas.Wangchuk (59) said he formed this assessment while working closely with CJP leaders Abhijeet Dipke, Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka during their nearly two-month protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi, seeking the ouster of Dharmendra Pradhan as Education Minister.“As far as their political ambitions are concerned, I think they do have political ambitions. I have assessed them quite closely. And perhaps there is nothing wrong with that either. They did not tell me that they have political ambitions. This is my assessment of them. They are not saints who do not want anything out of this,” Wangchuk said in a podcast with a YouTuber.He said critics had pointed out to him that Dipke had previously worked with the Aam Aadmi Party when he joined the movement. Wangchuk said this did not concern him, as having worked with a political party in the past was not wrong.During the protest, Wangchuk said he repeatedly told the leaders that any future political ambitions should not influence the student platform.“Throughout the time I was on that stage, I kept telling them that any of you may have political ambitions, and it is actually a good thing to have young and emerging leaders. But maintain the sanctity of this platform. Keep it neutral, apolitical and a pressure group, because that way you will be able to achieve much more,” he said.Wangchuk said he was pleased that they maintained that distinction. “If you start your career by taking up such issues, I think that is a good thing,” he said.Wangchuk has also taken a cheeky dig at actor Aamir Khan’s claim that he did not know him when 3 Idiots was being made, pointing to an old video that appears to show the two meeting.Wangchuk made the remark while speaking to the YouTuber, following his hunger strike during the student protest in Delhi.The exchange centred on the long-standing belief that the character Phunsuk Wangdu in Rajkumar Hirani’s 3 Idiots was inspired by Wangchuk. Aamir had said he was not aware of the Ladakhi activist when the film was being made. He also said neither Hirani nor writer Abhijat Joshi knew about Wangchuk at the time.Wangchuk, however, recalled an interaction between the two and referred to an old video showing Aamir at an event where Wangchuk was also present.He joked that Aamir may have forgotten the meeting because the actor was dressed as his character from Ghajini at the time.
